Virtuous Dance
Dance is a beautiful way to express yourself to music, whether it be a classic waltz or with modern hip-hop steps. However, there are quite a few differences between classical ballet and modern contemporary dance styles. Virtuous Dance Center offers all types of dancing and they’ve collected some facts for you based on their many years of experience.
For those who want to understand the major differences between classical ballet and modern contemporary dance classes, here are some things that set them apart.
1. Ballet Uses Distinct Dress & Footwear
One of the most noticeable differences between ballet and other dance forms is that it calls for the use of specific clothing, such as a tutu. Female ballet dancers also wear pointe shoes, which are designed for dancers to appear light and weightless, enabling them to dance on the points of their toes. Men also wear distinct ballet slippers.
2. Modern Dance Employs Diverse Clothing & Accessories
Unlike classical ballet, modern and contemporary dance utilize a host of different clothing accessories and styles. Tap and jazz dancers often wear tap shoes, while hip-hop dance clothes can be spacious and baggy. For many, this choice of dress is attractive and provides great freedom and creativity. In some cases, dancers may even be required to perform barefoot.
3. Classical Ballet & Modern Dance are Different Art Forms
Classical ballet has a long history, stemming from the court dancing of France and Italy during the 16th and 17th centuries. It was traditionally an art form enjoyed and performed by aristocrats. However, as time went on and classical music borrowed more from European folk music, ballet became more accessible. Modern and contemporary dance, on the other hand, has always been accessible. Many of the most modern styles, such as jazz, tap, and tango, were dance forms created and performed by average, working-class people who danced for enjoyment.
