Understanding Modern Dance and Contemporary Dance

Understanding Modern Dance and Contemporary Dance

The popular dance show, So You Think You Can Dance, has introduced modern and contemporary dancing to the mainstream public. Thanks to this, there is a lot of interest in people looking to explore and learn more about these dance stylings. There are a lot of differing opinions when it comes to defining modern and contemporary dancing. Virtuous Dance Center is here to help you understand the two terms and how they apply to the world of dance.

Modern Dance and Contemporary Dance

One opinion is that contemporary dance is a choreographed dance that’s recently been created that breaks boundaries while modern dance is a rebel that avoids the rules of classical dance.

Another opinion is that modern dance has a code and specific unique techniques created by the pioneers of this form of dance. In this sense, contemporary dance is a broad category of dance that means something different to everyone.

Yet another says that it’s hard to decipher any distinction between them. Both styles have grown out of classical ballet.

While it’s true that there’s a lot of different opinions on these dances, they both have a lot of similarities. They both come from the pioneering efforts of Martha Graham and Isadora Duncan. Modern dance is very free form. Contemporary dance takes cues from modern dance, ballet, jazz, and even hip-hop to create an amalgam of elements that flow well together.
